A Book Spy Review: ‘Red Sky’ by Chris Goff

In Chris Goff’s new thriller, Raisia Jordan, a U.S. Diplomatic Security Service agent, heads to Ukraine when People’s Republic Flight 91 crashes, killing everyone on board. Notably, among the two-hundred dead passengers and flight crew, is George McClasky, a veteran DSS agent who was escorting a Chinese-American prisoner, who was in possession of sensitive documents, home from China.

Jordan is dispatched to identify McClasky’s body, and quickly realizes that the downing was no accident. Someone intentionally caused the plane to crash, killing everyone else to hide the fact that McClasky and his prisoner–along with the documents–were actually the targets. The question is, what information could McClasky’s prisoner have had that would be worth killing everyone on board to keep hidden?

Also concerning is the way in which the plane was brought down. The technology used was part of a top-secret weapon being developed by several countries, including the United States.

As Jordan digs into the case, she discovers that a Russian named Vasyl Kozachenko may be behind the attack–and the closer she gets to him, the more danger she finds herself in. Kozachenko, not willing to take any chances, orders a hit on Jordan, who now must conduct her investigation on the run and ducking from bullets.

As Goff’s story surges forward, Jordan discovers a shocking revelation that alters the course of her investigation–forcing her to ask tough questions and consider everything, including McClasky’s motives and how he came in contact with his prisoner, who may or may not be the person they claimed to be.

Raisia Jordan is a strong character, and Goff’s developed her well over the course of two books (including last year’s Dark Waters). The plot is fun and engaging, but also smart and complex enough that it’ll keep readers off-balance and guessing as they flip the pages. The action sequences are well-written, and Goff provides plenty of fireworks, but the characters and investigation are what drive the story onward.

Chris Goff’s latest novel, Red Sky, is a top-flight, first-rate thriller that starts fast and never lets up.
