The President of the United States just died in a hotel room after a romantic evening with an attractive woman…who isn’t his wife.
President Robert Constable died in the middle of an affair in a Manhattan hotel suite. In the aftermath, certain people decided the best thing for the president, his family, and the country is to hide any and all evidence of the woman’s presence. No need to throw salt in an open wound. Instead, the world is told that President Constable died of natural causes.
The first lady, Hillary Constable, doesn’t believe her husband died naturally, but can’t risk raising the concern with the media or anyone inside the White House. Unsure of who to trust, she turns to a young senator named Bobby Hart.
It doesn’t take long for Hart to uncover far more than just an affair. Soon he stumbles upon a full-fledged conspiracy involving other nations and a slew of shady business dealings. Following the trail of breadcrumbs even further, Hart unearths a connection between Constable’s dealings and a secret society that appears to be running most of the world from underground.
As Bobby Hart closes in on the truth, his world is flipped upside down when he’s suddenly framed for not only the president’s death, but also his illegal activity and dealings.
While the plot itself is tight and suspenseful, it feels an awful lot like someone couldn’t help but put the name “Hillary” on a picture of the White House for the cover of a thriller about scandals and corruption. While it might capitalize on the political season and the constant coverage of the upcoming election, the title is misleading. The fact is, Hillary Constable has a small role in this novel.
The story itself is a cross between one of Brad Meltzer’s secret society, Culpar Ring-like novels and a Dan Brown conspiracy thriller. Bobby Hart is a solid character, and Buffa does a fantastic job developing him, but the secondary characters are mostly unrelatable and stiff. Most disappointing, though, is that the secret society here, a group who calls themselves The Four Sisters, is somewhat of a letdown.
Overall, if you can suspend your disbelief, Hillary is an entertaining adventure with a web of conspiracies that will keep readers off-balance and questioning everything they read.
